Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

produce, with independent technical proficiency in carving techniques, multiple artistic or functional pieces that meet objectives for the work

select and prepare materials and tools that maximise opportunity to meet design objectives

apply safe work practices to the use of carving equipment and materials

assess creative and technical outcomes of work and document

future improvement opportunities.

Knowledge Evidence

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

describe detailed characteristics of stone, wood or other carvable material in terms of:

availability

cost

ease of carving

natural features

suitability for different purposes

identify a range of carving tools available, and their particular features and applications

discuss reasons for the use of particular carving techniques to achieve particular effects

describe finishing techniques for particular materials

identify common technical problems that arise in the carving process and how they are resolved

describe safety considerations for the execution of both small and large scale carving projects

describe sustainability considerations that could be expected to form part of a brief.
