Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Evaluate design and production requirements for carving projects
   • Establish technical specifications and creativeparameters for carving projects
   • Liaise with relevant people about the project
   • Prepare documentation to support the carving process
   • Develop a plan of work for the project
2. Select and prepare resources for the carving project
   • Select material to be carved based on the way its particular characteristics support the design objectives
   • Prepare the material to be carved
   • Consider sustainability within the confines of the design brief
   • Evaluate carving tools required to achieve the design outcome
   • Select and set up equipment, materials and tools following all safety requirements and instructions
   • Apply strategies for the safe use, maintenance and storage of carving tools and equipment
3. Carve and finish sculptural work
   • Rough out the work and remove redundant material in preparation for detailed carving work
   • Mark the material as required to support the carving process
   • Define the form of the work through use of different techniques and tools
   • Achieve precision and accuracy in use of carving techniques as work progresses
   • Adjust the carving process to enhance the characteristics of the material when appropriate
   • Identify and resolve technical and design challenges
   • Inspect the overall items for unwanted flaws and marks, and take action to rectify them
   • Apply chosen finishing technique to carved work
4. Evaluate carving work
   • Review carving work for its technical proficiency and quality of finish
   • Assess the work in terms of its creative and aesthetic objectives
   • Identify and act on the potential for adjustment and refinement in future work

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

produce, with independent technical proficiency in carving techniques, multiple artistic or functional pieces that meet objectives for the work

select and prepare materials and tools that maximise opportunity to meet design objectives

apply safe work practices to the use of carving equipment and materials

assess creative and technical outcomes of work and document

future improvement opportunities.

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

describe detailed characteristics of stone, wood or other carvable material in terms of:

availability

cost

ease of carving

natural features

suitability for different purposes

identify a range of carving tools available, and their particular features and applications

discuss reasons for the use of particular carving techniques to achieve particular effects

describe finishing techniques for particular materials

identify common technical problems that arise in the carving process and how they are resolved

describe safety considerations for the execution of both small and large scale carving projects

describe sustainability considerations that could be expected to form part of a brief.
